The Chevy Camaro and the Ford Mustang have always been major rivals. They’re the cars that have always defined the pony car segment. Personally, I’m not a huge Mustang fan, but the Fox Body is undeniably awesome. But, how does the Fox Body stack up to one of the most iconic Camaro models ever?
Obviously, the price of these pony cars brand new doesn’t really matter in today’s age. However, the used price can be a huge factor on which one is better for you. For detailed information be sure to read our Fox Body Buying Guide. But to briefly cover the prices: the Fox Body costs around $4-5k for a decent condition example, and the IROC-Z is around $3-4k for a similar condition example.
The money you save on purchasing an IROC-Z could can towards modifications to improve handling since it is a little lacking in both the Camaro and Mustang chassis. But the Fox Body is quickly rising in price, so from an investment perspective the Fox Body is better, but from a young car guy with little money, the IROC-Z may be the better choice.
3. Factory Performance
Although factory performance is really a nonfactor today, it is an important comparison point. Although many people thought muscle cars handled awful the fox body prove that to be wrong. Fox body Mustang was one of the very first cars to pull over 1G on the skidpad as tested however it is not perfect. The Roxy gets a better braking setup with 4 wheel disc brakes and a panhard bar on the rear of Fox Body does not.
Fox Body Mustang
Horsepower: 220 @ 4,200 rpm
Torque: 300 @ 3,200 rpm
Weight: 3,000 – 3,200 lbs
Although the made similar power and torque, the Fox Body was still able to edge out in many performance tests thanks to its low weight. However, the IROC-Z redeems itself with a rear panhard bar which improved handling as well as a much better braking setup. Both will make a great autocross car, drag car, or street cruiser.
The small block Chevy engine found under the hood of the IROC-Z is undoubtedly one of the most modified engines in the world, and it has been featured in hundreds of racing series. The small block Ford is also very popular amongst hot rodders, but it’s not as popular as the Chevy. Ford Racing makes some of the most popular small block Ford parts such as the “303” camshafts and the ever popular GT-40 cylinder heads. Although Chevy does have its own performance parts division, it doesn’t really seem to be very popular for small block Chevy parts.
As far as total aftermarket (exterior, interior, engine, suspension, etc) the Fox Body is probably better. This is due to how popular the Fox Body chassis has become with young hot rodders who seem to stay away from the IROC-Z. As mentioned above Ford also supplies some of the most popular parts for the Fox Body. We’ve covered the top modifications that the Fox Body chassis needs to be sure to check that out.
This last section is very objective so don’t take it personal if you’re a die-hard Camaro or Mustang fan. Back in the ’80s and ’90s car styling was in an odd phase. Cars were going from massive for comfort to small for efficiency. They also were going from they boxy design to a more futuristic and curvy design. So all that together put both muscle cars in a very odd position. The result of this was odd styling for both vehicles.
The Fox Body looks nothing like Mustangs of the past. Gone were the traditional tri-bar taillights in favor of long horizontal tail lamps. The front end was also nothing like the traditional Mustang styling. The fastback shared a similar shape to Mustangs of the past, as did the notchback. Most people seem to prefer the body of the notchback, however, I personally prefer the fastback.
The Camaro definitely shares the same body lines and basic shape as Camaros before it, however, it definitely has the same ’80s styling as the Fox Body. Like the Fox Body, it also has long horizontal tail lamps and the same four-eyed headlights as the early Fox Body. The IROC-Z featured ever-popular ’80s body kit, which really completes the look of the IROC-Z in my opinion.
So, in conclusion, the Fox Body is the lighter weight vehicle which ultimately makes it better stock vs stock, but the IROC’s advanced suspension and braking setup are better when the road gets twisty. The small block Chevy has a stronger aftermarket, but the Fox Body chassis as a whole is more popular with hot rodders. Both are pretty cheap to buy right now but the Fox Body is quickly becoming sought after and is an excellent investment opportunity.
American muscle cars have been part of american culture since the ’60s. The Camaro and the Mustang have been also been America’s favorite muscle cars since the ’60s. Today the battle is more fierce than ever. Both make over 430 horsepower, both are luxurious, and both are insanely fast. But if you were to buy one, which one should you buy?
Camaro vs Mustang: Exterior
This part is very subjective, so we will not count this towards which one is actually better. With that out of the way, let’s get on with the exterior comparison.
The 2016 Camaro is a massive leap forwards from the previous generation of Camaro. Although the shape seems very similar to the previous generation, the look is totally different. The headlights are very futuristic, and the whole front end screams pissed off muscle car. The back end basically has smushed together Corvette tail lamps, but somehow they seem fitting.
The 2016 Mustang is far more modern looking than Mustangs of the past. The 6th generation body style is very muscular while also being refined, almost like a German car. The thin headlights definitely scream modern, as do the very three dimensional tail lamps. Overall the whole shape is undeniably Mustang, however I feel like it’s missing a little bit of that muscle car look.
I know I said at the beginning I wouldn’t count the looks of either of these cars. But, the 2016 Camaro just looks so angry it’s hard to ignore. It pains me as a Mustang fan, but the Camaro has the better looks.

Camaro vs Mustang: 4 Cylinder
Unfortunately not everyone can afford a $40k car that drinks fuel like an SUV. This is where the little turbo 4-bangers come into play. They offer you a good driving experience with better fuel economy, but a little bit less power.
Prices for the 4-cylinder Mustang starts at about $26k. That’s a really good price considering what you’re getting. The 4-cylinder Camaro starts at around $27k, which is slightly more expensive. Both of these prices are pretty good considering they’re both rear-wheel drive sports cars.
The EcoBoost Mustang sort of had some shoes to fill. Since the SVO Mustang is remembered by so many enthusiasts, the EcoBoost needed to meet the expectations of SVO fans. The EcoBoost delivers with an impressive 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.
The 4-cylinder Camaro doesn’t have any shoes to fill in, there was a 4-cylinder Camaro offered a long time ago, but it wasn’t good at all. Because of this Chevrolet didn’t focus on power, but rather on fuel economy. The Camaro makes a lackluster 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
One of the main attractions of purchasing a 4-cylinder pony car is the awesome fuel economy. Not everybody can afford the amount of fuel the V8 muscle cars drink. The EcoBoost Mustang gets a very impressive 22 city, 31 highway, and 26 combined mpg. The Camaro ties the Mustang at 22 city, 31 highway, and 25 combined mpg.

I came into this expecting the EcoBoost Mustang to take the 4-cylinder crown by a long shot. But, they have nearly identical fuel economy ratings, and nearly identical performance specs thanks to the Camaro’s low weight. The Mustang however, is cheaper and more powerful. Hopefully updated 4-Banger Camaros will receive a bump power. For now the Mustang’s low price tag will just barely give it the crown.

Camaro vs Mustang: 6 Cylinder
Maybe you don’t want a little 4-cylinder, but you don’t want a V8. Luckily there is an in-between solution for both pony cars, however they’re not your best option.
Chevy’s V6 Camaro starts at $29k, which is about $2k more than the 4-cylinder model. Ford’s V6 Mustang starts at $25K, which is actually $1k less than the EcoBoost model. The reason the V6 equipped Mustang is cheaper than the V6, is that the EcoBoost is really a better option.
The V6 Camaro makes a pretty impressive 335 horsepower and 284 lb-ft. This is slightly surprising given the 4-cylinder’s lack of power. The V6 Mustang makes 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. Like I said above in the price section, the V6 Mustang isn’t a great option.
The V6 Camaro makes 60 more horsepower than it’s turbo counterpart, but makes 11 lb-ft less. The V6 Mustang makes 10 horsepower and 40 lb-ft less than the EcoBoost. The EcoBoost is without a doubt the better engine than the V6.
Chevy’s V6 powered Camaro gets a pretty impressive 19 city, 29 highway, and 22 combined mpg. This puts it slightly behind the 4-cylinder model. Ford’s V6 Mustang nearly matches the V6 Camaro, and gets 19 city, 28 highway, 22 combined. This is also slightly behind the EcoBoost. Both get pretty much identical fuel mileage.
V6 Camaro Specs:
Horsepower: 335 horsepower @ 6,800 RPM
Torque: 284 lb-ft @ 5,300 RPM
Curb Weight: 3,450 lbs

V6 Mustang Specs:

Both of these V6 equipped cars are an excellent middle ground between the V8 models and the 4-cylinder models. Just like with the 4-cylinder models, these get nearly fuel economy. The Camaro is $4k more expensive, however it is quite a bit more powerful and slightly faster. The Camaro takes the crown for the V6 models.

Camaro vs Mustang: 8 Cylinder
If you’re anything like me, then the lower end models don’t really interest you. The V8 muscle car has been apart of American culture since the ’60s, and Americans still love it to this day. Both of these V8 engines make a ton of horsepower and torque, but which one is actually better?
The Mustang GT with absolutely zero option has an MSRP of about $33k. That’s pretty good considering the amount of performance you’ll get out of its V8 engine. The Camaro 1SS with zero options comes in considerably more expensive at $38k. The trend of the Camaro being more expensive than the Mustang has once again shown itself.
Ford’s Mustang GT does come equipment with a much smaller 5.0L engine. But, that doesn’t stop them from producing an insane 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet has a much easier time producing horsepower with their 6.2L in the Camaro which produces 455 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque.
It should be noted that both engines use very different technologies. The Mustang uses dual over head cams, and revs pretty high. The Camaro uses a pushrod design with a single cam in the block, and doesn’t rev as high as the Mustang.
If you’re purchasing a V8 muscle car you should already be expecting poor fuel economy. I would’ve skipped over this part if I hadn’t mentioned the fuel economy for the smaller engines.
Chevy’s 6.2L gets an EPA estimated 17 city, 28 highway, and 20 mpg combined. Although real world usage shows its actually closer to 18 combined mpg.
Ford’s much smaller and more advanced 5.0L gets an EPA estimated 16 city, 25 highway, and 19 combined mpg. To my knowledge this is a fairly accuracy real world number.
V8 Camaro Specs:
Horsepower: 455 horsepower @ 6,000 RPM
Torque: 455 lb-ft @ 4,400 RPM
Curb Weight: 3,750 lbs
0-60: 4.1 seconds
1/4 mile: 12.3 seconds
V8 Mustang Specs:
Horsepower: 435 horsepower @ 6,500 RPM
Torque: 400 lb-ft @ 4,250 RPM

As you can tell from the specs, the Camaro is actually slightly faster at everything. This isn’t to surprising considering its horsepower and torque advantage. Although the Camaro is a few thousand dollars more expensive, it’s faster and has a lot more torque. The Camaro takes the crown when it comes to the V8 models.

Camaro vs Mustang: High Performance
I want to compare the high performance models, however there is a major problem. Ford began production of the Shelby GT350 in 2015, and it has been a major success thus far. But, Chevrolet has yet to come out with their new generation high performance model.
The only real performance Camaro that compares to the GT350 is the Z28. But, the Z28 was available in the previous generation, not the current gen. For now the Mustang wins this category, but when Chevy releases the ZL1 Camaro we will revisit this topic.
Camaro: 3 Mustang: 2
Overall both the Camaro and the Mustang are both great vehicles. They both shine in their own specific ways, however there are some trends with both. The higher models Camaros are more powerful, but are also about 10% more expensive than a comparable Mustang.

The Chevrolet Camaro was born shortly after the initial success of the Ford Mustang, and has been one of the leaders of high performance-low cost cars. Many performance editions of the Camaro have come about over the years; SS, Yenko, Copo, Z28, and a few others. In 1988 Chevy dropped the Z28 and replaced it with the Camaro IROC Z28. Here’s seven good reasons to get your hands on one today.
The IROC Z came equipped with either a 305cid or 350cid engine depending on the model. The 305cid only made a measly 210 horsepower, or 230 horsepower with the optional G92 performance package. The 350cid made 245 horsepower, which is still very lacking by todays standards, but very respectable for the time period. The IROC Z is choked up mostly by emissions equipment that kills power output. Once all the emissions equipment is deleted (illegal), it can make as much as 280 horsepower for the 350cid engine.
This is probably the best thing about any Chevy muscle car. It comes with one of the most modified engines in the world, the small-block Chevy. Why is this good for you?
You can build it however you want, and on any budget. Chances are that someone has already done a build in your budget range, and heavily documented it so its easier for you to make your decision. Even weird things like 350cid rotating assembly inside of a 400cid block has been heavily documented by hundreds of people.
Besides the aftermarket, the small-block Chevy is pretty bullet proof in near stock form. Chevy built it for nearly 50 years, and they ironed out all the little kinks with the small-block a long time ago. Want more power but don’t want to stray from the factory reliability? Stick a set of ported Vortec heads on it and make 350 horsepower on factory Chevy parts.
6. They’re Sexy!
Whether you love or hate the styling of the IROC Z, you’ll probably agree that its an interesting design. It represents the Camaro’s before it, but doesn’t really represent Camaro’s after it. Its the weird middle child in the Camaro family. The body lines and shape strongly represent the original Camaro, and thats a great thing considering how good the original Camaro looked. However its not a perfect design, the “4-eyed” head lights aren’t that good looking, and the rear wing is a little to small in my opinion.
The IROC Z also represents styling of 1980s cars. Both the Fox Body and the IROC Z came out of the factory with a body kit on them, on the IROC Z its definitely less noticeable but its still there. Is this a bad thing?
No not at all,if you ask me, the body kit fits it very well, and the IROC overall is an excellent looking car overall.
What’s kind of weird is how similar the older Fox Body’s look to the IROC Z. They both used 4-eyed headlights that were placed in a nearly identical manner, they both use long, horizontal tail-lights, and they both have obvious fender bulges. However, the Fox Body is quite a bit more rounded than the IROC, the IROC has a lot of sharp lines that could’ve been rounded off.
5. IROC Z Aftermarket
Since the IROC Z is based the IROC racing machines of the 80s, the aftermarket backing for them is pretty sizable. Much like Spec E30, when a racing class is based on one specific vehicle, aftermarket parts and support becoming plentiful. Plus the fact that it’s a car that came with a small-block Chevy, which already has an insanely large aftermarket.
The IROC Z has one of the most modified and popular engines in the world, the small-block Chevy. Although IROC Zs have Chevrolet’s somewhat crappy electronic fuel injection system, its still on a small-block Chevy. Which means that it can easily, and cheaply be hopped up with aftermarket parts.
The options for a small-block are nearly endless; you can build a stroker motor, a race ready motor, or just a beast of a street motor. Building a 350 horsepower small-block is as simple as bolting on better heads, such as Vortec heads, stuffing a bigger camshaft in it, and sticking a 750cfm carb on top of it all.
The IROC Z also has a leg up on the Foxbody in terms of factory performance; rear disc brakes, and a pan hard bar are standard for an IROC. The pan hard bar makes the rear end much more predictable and ultimately easier to control at the limit. Disc brakes in the rear give the IROC Z a pretty good stopping advantage over the Fox. The IROC Z is also 5 lug, which means it has a ton of choices when it comes to after market wheels, especially when compared to the 4-lug Fox Body’s.
4. They’re Unique
In the late 80s, IROC Z Camaros and Foxbody Mustangs were just around every corner, street racing from stop light to stop light and cruising around. But today in 2016, its almost exciting to see an IROC Z rolling through town. Why is this? Well, American cars of the 80s and 90s aren’t role-models for high quality components. Because of this most of them have fallen into what most would consider an “unrepairable” state, forcing them closer to extinction. Not only that, but smart collectors are picking these up left and right.
What does this mean to an automotive enthusiast?
It means that most Camaro IROC Zs have gotten ridiculously cheap, sometimes ridiculously broken, and rare! They are quickly going up in price, so now is the time to get your hands on one before it’s to late. Even if you hate Camaros, pick one up and take good care of it for ten years and you’ll make bank when its time to sell it.
Think about how much a 1969 Camaro can sell for at an auction like Barrett-Jackson, now imagine that Camaro is yours and you just made $100k in profit? That could be you if you buy cars like the IROC Z and hold onto them.
As time goes on, the 80s muscle cars are becoming classics, and are rising in popularity with young hot rodders. It seems as though the IROC Z is stuck in the Foxbody Mustangs’s shadow, and doesn’t have a cult following or aftermarket backing like the Foxbody does.
Most of the time it is an underdog when it comes to stock straight line performance, but what about when the road becomes curvy? Well, the IROC has a much more advanced suspension system than the Fox Body, and also has a much better braking system as I mentioned before. Although is has a few hundred pounds more weight to lug around, the IROC Z is a better handling platform than the Fox Body.
It’s not that big of a secret that the IROC Z was pretty lacking in power, same goes for the Foxbody Mustang. Emissions regulations basically killed American cars of this era. The Mustang and the IROC Z made nearly identical power and torque, but the Camaro was a significant amount heavier.
Stock vs. stock the IROC Z is definitely an underdog, but i’d argue that the small-block Chevy has a better aftermarket, cheaper aftermarket, and is better at making power than the small-block Ford.
It’s not that the small-block Chevy is a better motor, it just generally has more cubic inches than a small-block Ford. The IROC Z, depending on your model will have up to .7 liters of a bigger engine than a Fox Body Mustang, making the potential to make more power much greater.
Since the Foxbody had such a weight advantage, it ultimately was the faster of the two. Especially when it came to streetlight drag racing. But who doesn’t love an underdog that never gives up? If you’re good with your hands you can pretty easily turn an IROC Z28 into a Mustang killing machine.
2. Chevy LS Power!
Like I mentioned before, muscle cars of the 80s were majorly lacking power. The cut in horsepower is mostly due to much stricter emissions. Muscle cars before the 80’s had as much as 450 horsepower out of the factory. Out of the factory the IROC Z put out anywhere from 145 to 230 horsepower depending on the year and engine.
You can just build the small-block that the IROC Z came with, but what if you want a modern engine? This is where the engine swap comes in.
Ditching the weak engine in favor of a Chevy LS is something I would recommend to almost every IROC Z owner. There are a bunch of companies making swap kits, making it a nearly bolt-in process. You can easily go from a measly 230 horsepower to 350+ easily, and also gain a lot of reliability and drivability in the process.
Even if you are one of those weird people who prefers carburetors over fuel injection. You could still carb swap an LS and be making way more power than a 350 and especially a 305.
Even a junkyard 5.3 LS out of a Tahoe with a few modifications will easily make 420whp+, something thats not easily said about the small-block that comes in the IROC Z from the factory. If you really don’t like modern engines or swapping engines in general, than a standard 305/350 build is always an option, but will likely never achieve the reliability, power output, and drivability that LS swapped IROC Zs have.
1. Camaro IROC Z28 History
IROC stands for International Race Of Champions, which was a racing series that takes top notch drivers from multiple racing series, and puts them all in identical cars, making it a race of pure skill. From 1975 to 1990 the Chevrolet Camaro was the official car for the IROC racing series. That means both the 2nd gen Camaro, and the 3rd gen Camaro are IROC cars. But Chevy of course never made the IROC Z when the 2nd generation Camaro was around.
In 1980, IROC racing ended, it wasn’t brought back until 1984. From 1984 to 1989, IROC chose the “newly” designed Camaro Z/28 as the official race car of the series. Chevrolet decided the celebrate the rebirth of the IROC series by making a commemorative Camaro model inspired by the IROC race cars. This is how the Chevy Camaro IROC Z/28 was born. I mean how cool is that, IROC Z owners get to brag that their car is based of off a race car.
Like I said before, having a racing heritage does wonders for the aftermarket of said car. IROC Zs have also been an unofficial standard for Auto Cross racing, and really are excellent handling cars. Many instructional videos of Autocross included the IROC Z, as it was a good standard to teach on. Plus its just cool to know you’re driving nearly the same car as top level racers were in the 80’s.

Have you ever been jealous of that one guy in your neighborhood with a classic car? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you should look into getting an IROC Z.
As time goes on the Camaro IROC Z28 gets rarer and rarer due to poor maintenance, and they don’t have a large following like its main competitor the Foxbody Mustang, making it the “hipster” choice. The IROC Z also has a pretty cool racing heritage, and the ability to swap in an LS motor, making it a really fast, and sort-of race bred car! Get your hands on one today before they’re all gone.
