Hyundai Kia 2.2CRDi Engine: Everything You Need To Know

The Hyundai 2.2 CRDi (D4HB) has been around since 2009 and can be found under the hoods of some popular SUVs like Santa Fe from Kia Motors Corporation; Palisade for Hyundai; Kia Sorento – both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models – produced by Hyundai Motor Company Asia Co., Ltd.

What are Hyundai Kia 2.2 CRDi Engines?

The Hyundai Kia 2.2 CRDi engine is a member of the Hyundai R engine. R engines are four-cylinder engines produced by Hyundai. The development of the CRDi engine was announced in the Advanced Diesel Engine Technology Symposium in late 2008 and began production in 2009. 

The R family of Hyundai engines feature a Graphite Iron block and an aluminum cylinder head, with chain-driven dual overhead camshafts operating the cylinders. The fuel is delivered to the unit through the Bosch third-generation common rail direct injection or CRD-i through piezo-electronic injectors operating at 26,000 psi. 

The air is fed via an electronically operated variable geometry turbocharger and an advanced ECU. 

The R engine is a lightweight, compact ride that features low-noise components to reduce vibration and booming sound. These include stiffened ladder frame housing for increased rigidity and plastic head coverings on the intake manifold or engine parts like oil filter casing. 

The special balancer shaft connects with an isolation pulley belt from the motor, which helps save weight and provides smoother operation due to reduced friction between rotating parts of different material compositions compared with steel counterparts.

The Kia 2.2 CRDi is a EURO 5 emission compliant. The engine achieved this due to the close-coupled Diesel Particulate Filter added with a highly-efficient exhaust gas recirculation with a by-pass valve.

Another Hyundai Kia 2.2 L variant is the 2.2 FR. This engine is used for rear-wheel-drive applications. The D4HC engine has a power rating of 199 HP and 325 lb-ft of torque between 1,750 and 2,750 RPM.

Problems Surrounding Hyundai 2.2 CRD-i Engine:
